Episode 210 - Bobby Harris
Bobby Harris, the visionary Grammy-winning Saxophonist, Producer, Writer, and Arranger, stands as the driving force behind The Dazz Band. Founded by Harris in the late 1970’s, The Dazz Band emerged as pioneers, fusing genres and creating a sound that resonated with audiences worldwide. The Dazz Band made history as the first group from the city to win a Grammy Award for Best Performance by an R&B Group or Duo with their chart-topping hit, “Let It Whip,” in 1982.
Under Harris’s guidance, The Dazz Band produced 7 albums on the iconic label, Motown Records and embarked on memorable tours alongside legends like The Gap Band, Rick James, Kool & the Gang, and Luther Vandross. Harris’s innovative electro-funk sound and impeccable performances propelled The Dazz Band to Gold and Platinum record success. The group dominated Billboard’s R&B and Pop charts with over 20 hits, including classics such as “Joystick,” “Swoop,” “You Are My Starship,” and “Heartbeat.”
The Dazz Band showcased their talent on well-known television shows like Soul Train, Solid Gold, and American Bandstand. As a Producer, Harris played a pivotal role in shaping the musical landscape of The Dazz Band, contributing to all 14 of their albums.
He attributes the group’s musical stability to the expertise of Producer Reggie Andrews (recognized for collaborations with Patrice Rushen, Tyrese, Rick James), who wrote “Let it Whip” and produced several of The Dazz Band’s standout hits. Harris’ contributions have earned him numerous awards, including a Diamond Award of Excellence for his groundbreaking concept, “United We Funk,” uniting multiple R&B acts under one common rhythm section during the late 1990s-2000s.
