Episode 5 - Emily Schultz
Emily Schultz hails from the thriving arts community of Edmonton, AB. She struck an interest in the arts at a very young age, taking it seriously by attending the Victoria School for the Arts throughout middle and high school. There, Emily developed her skills in singing, dancing, choreographing and acting while honing a love for percussion. She began accompanying many artists musically, which led her to perform at festivals and events across Canada such as the Edmonton Folk Music Festival (Edmonton, AB), the Salmon Arm Roots & Blues Festival (Salmon Arm, BC) and the Blue Skies Festival (Ottawa, ON).
Her love of performing took her to Victoria, BC, where she earned an enriched diploma in performing arts from the Canadian College of Performing Arts. Shortly after she moved to Vancouver where she later picked up a guitar and started the epic journey of writing music. In 2016, Emily moved to Toronto, ON. She has since been featured musically on eTalk as well as Much Music, the latter of which she worked alongside artist/producer Allie-X to produce Emily’s original song “All I’ve Ever Needed” in association with 5gum. She recently lent her voice and guitar/percussion abilities to the renowned Soulpepper Theatre Company as a featured artist in their production of ‘Riverboat Coffee House: The Yorkville Scene.’ Emily will take the Soulpepper stage again in 2021 as a featured performer in the remounted production of “The Secret Chord: A Leonard Cohen Experience.”
Emily’s sound is driven forward by her folk roots in a singer-songwriter style with influences from alternative soul and R&B. Combining powerful vocals, honest song writing and an acoustic guitar, she has developed a passionate performance experience that speaks honestly of human existence, and releases it with an onstage energy that is both raw and contagious. Some of her favourite venues she has played her original music in are The Great Hall, Burdock, The Mod Club and Rivoli, to name a few.
Emily is also heavily involved with a female non-profit organization called Honey Jam, which is centred around giving young, female artists the chance to further themselves in the industry through education and performance opportunities. An alum herself, Emily has been a Honey Jam ambassador since 2018, representing the female artist initiative at the 2019 JUNOs, working with local studios such as Post Office Sound and Slaight Music, as well as being charged with the creative arrangement and direction for performances involving female artists. Emily is currently getting ready to hit the studio this fall to record her debut EP, entitled “Family Name.”
