Episode 213 - Skip Martin

Skip Martin, a Grammy & Emmy winning artist, songwriter, producer and author, is celebrated for his contributions as both lead singer and trumpet player for two iconic groups: The Dazz Band and Kool and the Gang.

With an impressive tenure spanning 31 years, Skip has been an integral member of The Dazz Band. Collaborating closely with founder Bobby Harris, Skip played a pivotal role in propelling The Dazz Band to Grammy Award-winning success in 1982. His performances were marked by his powerful tenor voice and exceptional command of the trumpet.

As the lead vocalist of Kool and the Gang for 15 years, Skip’s influence was integral to the band’s prominence in the music industry. His contributions enriched Kool and the Gang’s sound and legacy.

In addition to his vocal and instrumental abilities, Skip’s musical excellence is evident through accolades such as a MOBO Award and an honorary Doctorate in Music, acknowledging his multifaceted talents. With The Dazz Band, He has attained the pinnacle of success, boasting Platinum and Gold record status, along with a prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the African American Music Association. Additionally, Skip has been honored with the Living Legend Award from the Black Music Academy.

In 2023, Skip won an Emmy for his role in remaking Curtis Mayfield’s “People Get Ready,” a project that involved over 25 artists including The Dazz Band.
