Raymond Calhoun, an award-winning drummer, producer, and songwriter, rejoined the Dazz Band in 2019. His musical journey began with studies at Howard University in Washington DC, where he cultivated his skills before landing his breakthrough opportunity with the Manhattans. After his two-year tenure with The Manhattans, Raymond spent just over a year performing with Peaches and Herb. From there, his talents caught the attention of The Gap Band, where he dedicated an impressive 33 years of his career.
During his time with The Gap Band, Raymond made significant contributions to the band’s legacy, including penning the iconic hit “Outstanding,” featured on the platinum-selling album, Gap Band IV. This track has left a memorable mark in music history, becoming one of the most sampled songs in hip-hop, with artists such as Snoop Dogg, Madonna, Puff Daddy, and Christina Aguilera drawing inspiration from its infectious rhythm.
Raymond simultaneously performed with The Dazz Band and The Gap Band, showcasing his exceptional talent and versatility. He began performing with the Dazz Band in the 90’s and played drums on their albums “Here We Go Again” (1993) and “Time Traveler” (2001). Raymond served as the drummer for the United We Funk tour organized by Harris & McClain, a monumental event that revitalized R&B bands following the rise of rap music.”.
With over 4 decades in the music industry, Raymond has toured and recorded with a multitude of artists, including his close friend Tito Jackson of the legendary Jackson 5. A true luminary in the industry, Raymond continues to shine as a drummer, producer, songwriter, and bandleader, leaving a lasting impact on the world of music.
